A dying tree can become a serious hazard, so early signs are key. Look for dead branches, especially near the top or ends. Bark peeling, deep cracks, or large sections missing bark may indicate internal decay. Mushrooms at the base often mean root rot. If leaves are sparse, discolored, or absent during growing season, the tree may be stressed or dying. Try the scratch test: lightly scrape a small twig with your fingernail. If it’s green underneath, it’s alive. If it’s brown and brittle, that part is dead. Also watch for leaning, especially if it’s new or worsening. Sudden tilting could mean root failure and the tree may fall. Cavities or soft, hollow spots in the trunk are also red flags. Not sure if your tree is safe?
